Diabetes and Pregnancy; Maternal Fetal RisksThis course discusses the various risks associated with pregnancy in a woman with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes. It also reviews the potential risk for the fetus of a woman with diabetes. This course is part of a 7 hour CE course (home study or live, see www.diabetesedu.org for more information) provided by the Diabetes Education Society. This program combines some of the Overview and all of the Maternal Fetal Risks of the longer program. The presenter is Gayle Curto, RN, CDE from John Meuir Diabetes Center Walnut Creek, CA.
Questions relating to the content are asked at the end of the presentation. A case study is reviewed including questions about the case. These questions and case study serve as the posttest.

- Define pregestational and gestational diabetes.
- Differentiate between type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes.
- State the pre-pregnancy A1C recommended value to reduce complications associated with pregnancy and diabetes.
- Identify at least 2 potential complications of pregnancy in women with diabetes.
- List at least 3 signs and symptoms of pre-term labor.
- Discuss briefly how chronic hypertension, which may be present pre pregnancy, increases the risk of preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and placental abruption.
- Discuss briefly the potential for worsening of retinopathy when a woman with diabetes becomes pregnant.
- Identify at least 2 kidney preconception assessment tests recommended for all women with diabetes greater than 5 years.
- List at least 3 symptoms of preeclampsia.
- Discuss proteinuria level as a way to predict the risk of preeclampsia.
- Discuss the role of hyperglycemia and macrosomia.
- Discuss the prevention of polyhydramnios in the woman with diabetes.
- Discuss at least one cause of hypoglycemia in a newborn infant.
- List at least 2 fetal monitoring tests used to help determine health of fetus.
- Discuss concern for development for type 2 diabetes in the woman with gestational diabetes and her child.
