Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a 3 - hour course. It will review the current therapy recommendations for diagnosis, blood glucose monitoring, medical nutrition therapy, exercise/activity recommendations and when to start insulin. Information in this course is based on the findings of the International Workshop Conferences on GDM, Clinical Practice Guidelines of the American Diabetes Association and other references. Several handouts are provided to be used with clients if appropriate. A Case Study is used to evaluate knowledge.

| Course Objectives: |
- Define gestational diabetes.
- Identify the screening tests and diagnostic criteria used for GDM.
- Discuss briefly how to help patient move through grief associated with diagnosis of GDM and fear of harm to fetus.
- Discuss concerns for the fetus born to a woman with GDM.
- State the importance of monitoring blood glucoses (including HbA1c or fructosamine), urine ketones, food intake and activity levels to help normalize blood glucoses.
- Develop meal plans to meet nutritional needs for clients with GDM during and after pregnancy.
- Discuss weight gain recommendations for women with GDM.
- Briefly describe exercise programs appropriate for GDM.
- Discuss use of oral diabetes medications in GDM.
- Identify when insulin is required to treat GDM.
- Discuss the importance of continued good eating and exercise habits after delivery to help prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes later in life.
