Understanding Barriers to Behavior Change in Diabetes Self-Management EducationUnderstanding Barriers to Behavior Change in Diabetes Self-Management Education is a 2-hour course addressing the difficulties involved in helping others change behavior. We would all take better care of ourselves if we could. But formidable barriers can block the way, often unseen by health professionals, families or by clients themselves. What stops people from making positive changes? How can diabetes educators help clients overcome those barriers?
This class will provide you with insight into clients’ barriers to change. Barriers addressed include external factors: socioeconomic, practical, and interpersonal. The program also covers internal factors, psychological and spiritual. Coping techniques include goal setting, building hope, finding support, and raising self-efficacy. The program also addresses barriers within educators and between educators and clients. Several example programs are reviewed briefly. Several teaching guides for use with clients are provided.
